Cosplay and Shades of Pink

Just in case you didn't see it over at Kallysten's last week, I'm reposting my blog about cosplay here. I'll also be doing another giveaway. This is part of my efforts to bring attention to Shades of Pink, Vol. Two, the charity anthology I contributed to in an attempt to raise money for breast cancer research. If you haven't done so already, please consider donating. There is no dollar amount (though $5 is suggested). Just whatever you're comfortable with. The anthology is our thank you gift to you for helping to fight this insidious disease.

I grew up thinking Halloween was the best holiday ever. It was more than the candy. It was the costumes. My uncle always put them together for me and my siblings, and I have to tell you, we were the hit of our rural community. One year, I went as a nun, which amongst my primarily Polish Catholic neighbors, was fantastic. Another year, my ten-year-old brother dressed up as Mama from the show Mama’s Family. I don’t even remember what we were that year. Nobody saw us. They were too busy paying attention to how fabulous my brother looked.
When I moved away to college, however, I discovered something terrible. I had not inherited my uncle’s wonderful creativity when it came to costumes. I grew to dislike anywhere I had to dress up because I had no idea what to be or how to put together the pieces of anything that looked remotely good. I stopped wearing costumes of any sort, though I secretly coveted every single wonderful get-up I saw on other people.

Having kids of my own forced me back into the costume game. It was easy when they were tiny. There are a million adorable costumes for small children. But then a miraculous thing happened.

I realized my daughter had inherited my uncle’s gift.

She loves cosplay. She could put together the most random items and come up with an insanely creative idea. It started to come together in a more cohesive way three years ago when she turned eleven. She was in love with Dr. Who and decided she wanted a themed costume that year. I thought she’d pick Ten. She’d been in love with David Tennant from the moment she saw him.

Nope. She went for the more challenging costume. She built a TARDIS. Not a clothing version. A five-foot box that she painted and rigged out with lights and sound effects.
This year, she’s trying something new. She wants to be Dancing Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. Complete with music and flowerpot. We’ve been out shopping for the various material she’ll need for the upper half, but we’re still in design stage for the pot and music. She tackles each costume like an engineering project, which turns me into a proud mom every single time.

So to say that I have a soft spot for brilliant, scientifically-inclined girls who like cosplay is an understatement. I am not embarrassed at all that I took inspiration from my daughter when it came to my heroine in "Pure Rose". Rose is a computer software engineer who works for a digital audio company, games online in her free time, and has a closet full of costumes she built from scratch. Her costume as Frenchie from Grease might not be the technical challenge others might be, but she sure as hell went for realism as much as possible.

Because when it comes to cosplay, it’s the attention to detail that always wins. People notice. And sometimes, like for Rose, it can mean gaining something you never would’ve anticipated as a reward.

Now I want to hear what some of your favorite costumes were! Everyone who leaves a comment will go into a drawing for a $20 Amazon gift certificate. On Monday, I’ll draw a name at random to win!

Vampires in Love

When I hear the phrase "fool for love," a very specific image comes to mind. This one:

For those who don't recognize them, that's Buffy and Spike from the season 5 episode called, you guessed it, "Fool for Love." It's the episode where viewers finally got some real backstory on Spike, and it wasn't what most of us predicted. The badass vampire was revealed to have come from nerdy roots, ultimately getting turned because he was mocked and rebuffed by the woman he loved. Here, he's on his knees in front of Buffy, a fool for love yet again because he knows his feelings for her will never be returned.

To this day, Spike remains one of my favorite TV characters ever. He's the epitome of everything that breaks my heart in romantic heroes - that badass edge that hides a heart that loves too easily and deeply. He tries to earn a place in Buffy's life over and over again. Sometimes, he fails so spectacularly it just makes you love him more. Because it makes him human, even though he's a vampire.

I've never made it a secret how vampires are my favorite paranormal creatures, so when it came to my latest menage, I knew that was the direction I wanted to take it. My male heroes, Seth and Simon, are thralls to a dangerous female vampire who's enslaved them for decades. They have some of the abilities but not all of the limitations that come with being a vampire, a fate that Seth sealed for Simon when he fell in love with the other man in the fifties. He did it all for love, but now, he wants a better future for Simon. That's where Claire, the granddaughter of the mage who trapped them, comes in. It takes all three of them, and feelings none of them quite expect, to set the men free.

You can read an excerpt at Ellora's Cave. It might even tempt you to buy a copy.

In the meantime, though, as part of the bloghop, I'm doing a little giveaway to three random commenters. Leave a comment on this post and you have a chance to win one of three prizes:

1. A free copy of my e-book, the interracial vampire menage Enthralled in Silver
2. A Jules Smith gunmetal bracelet with a fangs charm:
3. A silver Pink Cosmo heart clutch:

So tell me. What do you think of when you hear the phrase, "fool for love?"

Last day for giveaway

Today is the last day to comment on any post made since February 14 for a chance to win the sterling silver necklace I'm giving away to celebrate the release of Enthralled in Silver. It's really pretty, so don't lose out!

Also, I just had to share this brief NPR article about one of my favorite cartoonists ever. Bill Watterson of Calvin & Hobbes fame created a movie poster for a documentary about comic strips called Stripped. Check it out!

Giveaway!

In conjunction with my new release from Ellora's Cave, I'm giving away a sterling silver handcrafted necklace with a Celtic triquetra design very similar to what Seth and Simon are branded with in Enthralled in Silver.

Created by Monique, the owner of the Etsy shop LifeofSilver, it's on a sterling silver 18-inch rope chain, and the pendant is sterling silver as well.

All you have to do for a chance to win is leave a comment on any post made in my blog from now through the end of the month. On March 1, I'll select a winner at random from everybody who's commented.

Getaways for the Awestruck Child in Me

Welcome! I'd say pull up a chair by the fire to warm up, but I live in the Bay Area in California, and we're in the throes of temperatures in the mid-60s, so I'll just say, come on out to the patio, pick out a lounger, and enjoy some January sunshine with me.

I'm sorry, that's mean, isn't it?

If it makes you feel better, I've had more than my fair share of cold weather in my lifetime. I grew up in mid-Michigan. In the country. On a dirt road. Whenever it snowed, we just plain got stuck, because we lived too far out of town for them to do much about it. We relied on one of our neighbors to come around and plow us out. Frankly, I loved it as a kid. Snow drifts six feet high that stretched over thirty yards on both sides of the driveway. We used to tunnel through them, creating catacombs to crawl through. For a kid who lived in her imagination, it was like having my very own Narnia.

These days, though, I have to find that kind of magic in other ways. With my schedule so crazy between raising a family and writing my stories, I find myself making imaginary travel plans to places around the world that appeal to the awestruck child in me.

Like the Kykkos Monastery in Cyprus:

Located in the Troodos Mountains, it's ornately decorated on the inside, with beautiful murals that have recently been restored. Take a look at this gentleman's video for a closer peek at how stunning it all is.

For something more urban, there's the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore:

I think it's an engineering marvel. On the top there are infinity pools where you can go all the way up to the edge and gaze out over the bay and the city:
That takes magic to a whole 'nother level.

Not that I don't love San Francisco. I do. A lot. I love it so much, more and more of my stories are set here, like my upcoming Bay Wolves series at Amber Allure. But that doesn't mean I don't want to escape when the time is right. Like if the weather isn't exactly pleasant.

Where would you go for that magical escape? Tell me in the comments. Everyone who comments will be eligible to win the Kindle Fire grand prize, but on top of that, I'm giving away a prize to one random commenter on this post, a 3-piece Kenneth Cole black cosmetics travel kit for your next getaway:

Bits and pieces for Friday

Blogging is likely to be spotty over the next two weeks, for obvious reasons. I'm the one who keeps Christmas moving in my house, so I'll be busy. If it was left to my husband, nobody would even get dressed on Christmas day, let alone eat.

I'm working on edits today, and I've been told there's more in my immediate future. I also go cover art for my EC menage coming out in 2014, but I'm going to save that for sharing later. Suffice it to say, it's gorgeous. I'm so pleased with how it turned out.

Don't forget to check out the Amber Pax holiday office party going on over at the pax blog, either. We're giving one more pax collection away next Wednesday, and you still have the chance to win the earrings I'm giving away on my post, too.

Have a great weekend!

Blog hop giveaway winner

Now that the Hop Against Homophobia and Transphobia is over, I'll get back to my regularly scheduled blogging. I didn't want to take away from the importance in bringing it to people's awareness by burying the post.

But there's one last thing I have to do before I can move on. I need to pick the winner from the giveaway! And that is...

Marie!

I have your email, so expect an email from me soon. :)

Guest-posting at Sandra Sookoo's

This week, Sandra Sookoo is hosting a few of us authors who didn't go to RT this year. Today is my day!

As well as talking about being a fangirl and my scant brushes with celebrity, I'll be giving away a $20 Amazon gift card to one lucky commenter. Head on over for a chance to win!

EPIC eBook Award winner!

I got amazing news on Saturday night. My Christmas short story, 'Tis the Season, won Best Short Story at the EPIC eBook Awards!

For divorced dad Alex Tunney, the Christmas choir concert seems like the perfect time to show his son he's ready to work on their relationship. Arriving late isn't his fault, but the last thing he expects is for Jake to take off without a word once the concert's over. He's not the only abandoned father, though. Marty Osterberg waits for his daughter, and when they discover the teenagers have left together, they team up to find them.

Of course, he'd have a much easier time if Marty didn't look exactly like the perfect present to find under his Christmas tree...

I'm quite chuffed. I wanted to write a Christmas story that was sweet without being sappy, and this one still makes me laugh.

To celebrate, I'm going to give away a free copy of it to one commenter on today's post. I'll pick a winner at random on Friday.

Giveaway - Raising the Bar by Marie Harte

This past weekend, I read Raising the Bar by Marie Harte. Because I really enjoyed it, I'm going to do a giveaway of it this week to a random commenter on today's post. Leave a comment, and on Friday, I'll pick one at random to win a free e-book of it. It's that easy.

Dr. Dylan Warren is too old to be swapping places with his twin brother, but to save a million-dollar deal, he’ll play along. He never counted on a sexy, nosy male contractor being able to tell the difference between them. In order to protect his brother’s reputation, Dylan agrees to meet Harper for dinner—at what turns out to be a high-class club that caters to its patrons’ every need.

Dylan has never made any bones about being bi, but he’s never had two lovers at once. Suddenly, he’s in lust with not only Harper but the hot female bartender intent on serving them more than drinks. Between Freddy, a beautiful woman who seems to know him better than he knows himself, and Harper, a man who pushes his every boundary, Dylan finds himself in that most uncomfortable of places—falling in love without a safety net.

A little more information on it...though it doesn't say it on the website, this is the third part of Marie's series called the Wicked Warrens. Each part is a standalone, however, so it's not necessary to have read the first two titles. It's also m/m/f, with mild BDSM elements. Very hot!

What I Read

Though I live in the Bay Area, I did not watch the Super Bowl yesterday. We're not a football family, not when I have a British husband who played rugby as a kid. I ended up reading and writing for the most part, which is how I usually spend my Sunday afternoons, frankly. I read a wide variety of stuff, but yesterday, it was m/m time travel.

When Ted Ennis steps out the doors of the Criterion Theatre for a cigarette and finds himself in Victorian London, he begins to doubt his sanity. At first he thinks it's all a film set, and is sure that the strikingly handsome young man leaning against a lamppost must be the leading man...
What starts as a sordid transaction with a beautiful rent boy quickly turns into something much deeper, drawing him back again and again as he gets to know Jem and craves meaningful encounters with him.
But Ted doesn't understand the exact conditions necessary for his trips through time--and for Jem, time may actually be running out. Now Ted has one last shot to get back to Jem and save their relationship, before it's too late...
I didn't stand a chance against this one. Time travel? Check. Theater? Check. I made my choice to buy it before I finished the excerpt.

It's a highly romantic, very sentimental erotic romance. Its novella length does mean that it's a little bit of insta-love, but sometimes, that's what I'm looking for, and this one worked for me. It's told in first person, in Ted's POV, and he really benefits from this. He's a damaged, grieving man, and the vulnerability he presents is well-balanced with the glimpses we get into how he fights against it. I loved Ted to pieces. I did wish that I could get to know Jem better, especially why he fell so quickly for Ted, but I still liked him enough to be invested in their HEA.

For more information, check it out at Carina.

Because I enjoyed this one, I'd like to spread that joy! I'm going to give a copy to a random commenter on this post. I'll pick a winner on Saturday.

And don't forget, comments on this post still qualify for my giveaways for my two January releases!

New release - The Low Between

I have a new release today! My noir m/m, The Low Between, is now out at Amber Allure:

It was supposed to be simple.
All struggling actor Carlo Baresi had to do was pick up a man in a taxi, drive him to the location he specified, then report where he’d taken him. The only problem is, the man isn’t who he claims to be...and they both know it.

Bookstore owner Joe Donnelly has a reputation for helping those in need, but this plan has been a bad one from the second he stepped in. Discovering someone has switched out the taxi driver is one more complication he doesn’t want, especially since Carlo is the kind of distraction that can get a man in serious trouble if he’s not careful.

But the men have something in common other than their mutual attraction. They’re both loose ends, struggling to find out what is really going on.

And murder is always complicated, even when you’re on the same side...
Head on over to Amber Allure and take a closer look!

In conjunction with my new release, I'm giving a DVD set of classic noir films. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this or any post until February 15. A winner will be selected at random on the 16th. For details about this and my other current giveaway, check out my giveaway post.

Giveaways

Okay, so my recovery this week took more out of me than I anticipated. Everything is going great, though. I had my follow-up with the doctor on Thursday, where he looked it over and redressed it. My stitches come out a week from tomorrow, but I'll be in this shoe for weeks yet to come.

But my plans clearly got derailed. I had hoped to be active in blogging this past week to talk about A Simple Charm, but that obviously didn't happen. So, I'm going to run two different giveaways at the same time, and keep them active until my next release comes out in February.

For my carnies story, I wanted to do something a little bit different. I'll be giving away two matted 8x10 prints:

I found them at this seller on Etsy. She's got some great stuff. The prints are done on aged dictionary pages, so they have this wonderful sepia tone to them. It's much stronger than in my pictures. And in case you can't read what it says on the tree print, it says, "We do not see things as they are. We see them as we are."

The second giveaway is in conjunction with my release out today, The Low Between. This is my story in the Amber Allure Noir pax, five stories all centered on a noir theme. For this, I'll be giving away a collection of classic noir films on DVD - The Asphalt Jungle, Gun Crazy, Murder My Sweet, Out of the Past, and The Set-Up.

Unfortunately, because of shipping costs, the prizes are only available to those in the US. That doesn't mean you can't participate if you're from elsewhere, though. If the winner ends up being outside the US, I'll substitute a $40 Amazon gift voucher for them instead.

All you have to do is comment on any post between now and February 15. Your name will get thrown in every time you comment. I'll announce the winners on the 16th.

New Amber Quill pax blog

I've been working recently with Clare London in launching a new blog for Amber Quill, one dedicated solely to promoting the pax collections. This was its first full week, launched with the most recent release, the That Old Gang of Mine collection.

Some of the authors will be contributing posts to talk about their stories, but more importantly, anybody who comments on one of the posts the week after a release - and that's including this week - gets an opportunity to win the entire collection. That's five stories to one lucky person! So head over, take a look, and leave a comment. You just might be the winner!

Giveaway - North of Heartbreak by Julie Rowe

Well, I took this past week off (outside of Six Sentence Sunday) to recuperate from RT (and yeah, I needed it, lol), but now I'm back on schedule and ready to give away another book!

This week, it comes from Carina, and features an Alaskan setting, always a weakness of mine...

Since her divorce, Willa Hayes has thrown herself into her work as a nurse practitioner in the remote town of Stony Creek, Alaska. She's regained her self-confidence and her heart is almost healed. Then her newfound peace is shaken by the arrival of sexy flyboy Liam Reynolds. Willa can't deny she's instantly, intensely attracted to him--even if she's convinced he's yet another Mr. Wrong.

Liam has his own reasons for fleeing to the isolation of the north, and a relationship is the last thing he wants. He wasn't counting on being drawn to the pretty nurse who accompanies patients on his flights to southern hospitals.

Fortunately, the temptation--and the desire to avoid anything serious--is mutual. So the pair comes up with an arrangement: sensual, steamy, no-strings fun. But when things heat up on a cold Alaskan night, the rules of the game may change forever...

You can read an excerpt at Carina.

All you have to do to enter is comment to this post. That's it. Next Monday at 9am PST, I'll choose a comment at random to win.

You don't need an account to leave a comment, but if you don't have one, please consider leaving an email address you can be contacted at. That guarantees I can get a hold of you in case you win.
